Review – Autumnwatch, BBC2

OddiehumbleJesus H. Christ. After watching Autumnwatch yesterday, I said, with great authority (to myself) "Best. Thing. On. Television." I think I may mean it too. The show is a glorious celebration of everything that is going on around our ears, and if you didn’t appreciate how great this country can be, Kate Humble, Bill Oddie and Simon King are there to remind you. The trees are turning incredible colours of orange and brown (if you live in central London, trees are those things that you’ve seen in old films) and animals are doing amazing things to get back here from places far far away!

Not only are they showing us how great things are around us, but also, the stunning things that are going on elsewhere. On the Isle of Rum in the Highlands, it’s rutting season for the stags. Now, if there is a more impressive creature on the British Isles, I’d like to know about it. Locked in vicious turf wars and trying to impress the ladies, the stags engage in incredible (and bloody) battles, locking horns and unleashing blood curdling roars (typical men eh?) it really is impressive and breathstealing stuff.

As is par for the course with this programme (preceded by the tremendous Springwatch), the show tracks the journeys and lives of groups of animals; in this case, ‘super’ geese. These geese are mental. They can fly from Iceland to Lancashire in one sitting. No stops. They do this every Autumn, and have been fitted with satellite trackers to show their amazing voyage. Some have arrived already, whilst some are in the Arctic… some are in Denmark… it’s mind boggling stuff.

All that’s left for me to say is that every single person with a brain in their head should watch this marvellous programme. It is without doubt, the best thing on our screens.[Mof Gimmers]
