Apparently, I’m not the only one to think The One Show is a bit…unusual. Media pundits, including BBC insiders and a former producer of Nationwide, upon which The One Show is said to be based, having been queuing up to give the show a right panning, according to today’s Guardian. David Hanington is quoted saying: "I’ve been viewing The One Show all this week … Frankly, it’s a load of predictable, pedestrian tat."
Strong words, but it seems not strong enough to finish the program off, because the Beeb may be about to recommission the show, albeit with a few major changes.
While presenter Adrian Chiles is said to be "carrying the show," fellow presenter Nadia Sawalha has not met with such approval. Sources in the BBC have claimed that she is "not experienced enough to handle the pressures of a daily live peak time show."
Ouch! A little unfair on poor Nadia who probably only needs to learn to control the giggling to be at least as good as most of the daytime TV presenters. No, I think the trouble lies a little closer to the top.
The programme is the brainchild of BBC1 controller Peter Fincham, who wanted to make an updated version of the magazine show Nationwide. His backing is seen as a major reason why The One Show may be given another chance – he can’t afford to be associated with another flop like Davina McCall’s chatshow, which was also his idea. The final decision to Deal or Not Deal with another run has not yet been made.
