Review – Supernanny, C4

SupernannySupernanny, Jo Frost, may not be the most eloquent person on TV, but by ‘eck, she’s good at her job. More important than that, she seems to get a genuine kick out of it too! I’m full of praise for ‘Jo-Jo’ today, as last night, I witnessed some of the most horrendous kids known to man, being turned around by the magnificent Frost.

Tara, the mother of last nights show was under seige by her children. The youngest, a four-year-old boy, was determined to make me sad, angry  and wince all at the same time. He swore at his mother with all the deftness of a drunk tramp, and beat away his mothers confidence with his malicious little fists. He was also a very fast runner… especially into the road in front of cars during the school run. When the boy played up, so did his two older sisters…

…surely Frost had met her match with these? Fat chance…

The startling thing about the show was just how unruly the children were. We’re not talking a couple of tantrums over a Findus Crispy Pancake here. We’re talking about children running off in front of moving cars. We’re talking about a little lad throwing punches at your face whilst calling you a c*nt. What didn’t help matters was the short fused monotone mother. To judge her cover, she looked like she was a bit scally at school… one of the Lambert and Butler perms. Of course, this doesn’t account for her kids behaviour… it’s more to do with her inability to share her emotions.

It was clear from the off that Tara (the mother of the family) wasn’t able to drop her guard. Probably from years of acting hard in front of mates and teachers. The thing that was heartbreaking was that, underneath all that front, there was a tender woman who cared for her kids a hell of a great deal. Only in the last ten minutes of the show did we see a genuine smile.

One of Frost’s techniques is the famous ‘naughty corner’ which usually works pretty quickly (thanks to editing I imagine), but last night was incredible. The children took over an hour to understand any kind of punishment. Unlike the Teen Tamer seen on Five last week who bullied everyone into submission, Frost slowly got the whole family to really understand respect for one another. I one sequence, when mum was trying to put her son to bed, it took 98 attempts. N-I-N-E-T-Y E-I-G-H-T. It was exhausting to watch, both emotionally and physically. Imagine what the mum was going though…

Obviously, by the end, tempers had been quashed, and the ‘money shot’ of the show was to see this once terrible family communicating to each other through smiles and fun, and not a fist in sight. Then it showed next weeks kids who look even worse ("suck my c*ck" is what one boy says to Supernanny). Be there, it’s bound to be a cracker.[Mof Gimmers]

Why oh why do these families agree to be on? If a four-year-old says ‘c*nt’ or ‘suck my c*ck’ then they don’t deserve to be demonised by a TV programme – sort the parents out. Was the dad in jail? Had he cleared off or did he just say nothing? Think I can guess.
