Top Gear presenter slammed for ‘cannabis’ gag

James_mayI’m a huge fan of James May, presenter of Top Gear. Not because I like Top Gear, nor indeed his resenting style. I just like the fact he’s chinning Richard Hammond in this photo (left). That said, May has found himself in a bit of trouble with the bus drivers union after a gag he made on the show recently.

May said; "Being a bus driver was the easiest job I have ever done," he
explained. "It was easier than sitting around on this show because
there were no cameras around. Because you’re not being filmed when
you’re a bus driver, you can just light up and have a joint."

Of course, some people with no sense of humour began to slam their bedroom doors in disgust.

A spokesperson for the busmen’s union (I told you… you thought I was making it up didn’t you?) told the Daily Star in a very concerned and annoyed tone, "It
would be highly irresponsible to drive any vehicle whilst under the
influence of drugs. It is not something that he should joke about. Bus
drivers bear a great duty of care to their passengers. I am
disappointed by James May’s actions and would hope that looking back on
them, he would make an apology."

A spokesman for the BBC insisted that the comments were made "in jest", which is blatantly a stand of ‘stop being so tetchy all the time’. "The Top Gear team’s irreverent sense of humour is familiar to the regular audience," he said. "The comment was not to be taken seriously." The Beeb man is quite obviously talking sense here, but I can help but hope that a spate of stoned bus drivers take to the streets asking old ladies if they’ve got any 10p crisps to share.[Mof Gimmers]
