I just wanted to give everyone a heads up about a new show on HBO that I think is awesome. Technically Lucky Louie isn’t that new. The first season is about to end in America. I just figured I would make sure it didn’t go south before I recommended it. Lucky Louie is HBO’s take on the traditional blue-collar family sitcom. The only difference is the show centers around people who could actually exist. I don’t even think I can do the show justice describing it. Louis C.K. stars as a hapless muffler shop employee who has a wife clearly too hot for him and a kid that he basically wants to strangle. All the guy wants is some peace and quiet so he can pleasure himself in the kitchen closet. Is that so wrong? The beauty of the show is its simplicity. The sets are a throwback to The Honeymooners and the scripts may very well be improvised. The entire cast, except for Louie’s child, is made up of comedians. Michael Hagerty, Laura Knighlinger, Jerry Minor, Jim Norton, and Rick Shapiro are funny on their own. With them all together I literally can’t stop laughing while watching. The show really gets me with its frank dialogue and grotesque male nudity that seems so inappropriate that it is appropriate. You have to watch to see what I mean. On one episode Louie admits he doesn’t know if his wife is Jewish or Catholic because he forgot and now he’s too afraid to ask. Just to give you an example of the dialogue, check out the clip below from YouTube. Pure genius. It is totally worth a half hour of your time. At the very least buy it when it comes out on DVD.
