Traffic came to a standstill, people packed the streets and it made the front page of the newspapers. It wasn’t the death of a royal or the victory of a national sporting team, but a bus. Last December 8th, the old Routemaster buses stopped running in London and got the kind of publicity normally reserved for C-list celebs. Never mind the fact you could nearly break your neck trying to jump on and off them while they were moving, they were kind of cool and did make you wonder what it would be like to hitch a skateboard to them a la Marty McFly in Back to the Future.
Now, as yet further proof that their fame will echo down the ages, BBC4 are repeating a special night dedicated to them on Sunday.
Admittedly it consists of only three programmes, but considering a BBC4
evening schedule only contains about four, that’s not bad. In keeping
with these rather camp BBC4 special nights, the links are as tenuous as
possible – an Arena documentary, a Young Ones episode and an Eric Sykes
short film. At least they managed to avoid the temptation to show an
On the Buses episode…
