TV Review – E.R. C4, May 15th

KovacIronically, the first time I really watch ER, I find myself on my back feeling sorry for myself because I’m ill. For all these doctors that milled around my eyes last night, unfortunately, today sees your writer still under the weather.

Gutted.

Still, at least I’ve have a sneak peak inside the cult that is ER. What did I make of this show seeing as I’ve never really watched it before?

As with any popular US drama, ER is heavy on the breathing. Doctor’s race around and pant at each other spewing out some kind of weirdoid algerbra with a tommy gun staccato. It grips you alright… probably because my brain felt it was pinned to the back of my skull in terror. Nevertheless, there’s enough going on away from the operating table to keep your eyes open.

Dr Kovac, presumably the new George Clooney of the show (ruggedly handsome, concerned for people, big heart, but sometimes a little troubled) seems to be the focus of the whole programme. He’s going out with a woman (called Abbey Lockhart) who it seems the entire nation likes. I’m not sure how I know this, but she radiates a certain kind of… pleasentness and forthrightness that surely everyone warms to? Anyway, she’s having is baby, but they’re not telling anyone about their relationship.

There is also an Asian actor in the show called Parminder Nagra, who I definately recognise… but from where? Oh that’s right, she was in Bend it like Beckham (thanks Google). Well, she seems to be having problems with her hubbie (who is a soldier, and always away from home) and certainly has a bit of electric crackling with the new Carter… who is called Dr Barnett. We’ll be seeing more of those two as a pair methinks. I also reckon it’s going to make lots of viewers happy too.

It really is quite odd reviewing an established and well watched programme that you’ve got no idea about. Especially when you’re ill. Tune in next week at 10pm on Channel 4 to keep up with the blood and guts in the Emergency Room!
