Review – Night Night, BBC2

Julia_davis_2I think I might be in a bit of a funny mood at the minute. Last evening, I watched Nighty Night and didn’t think it was all that good. Sure enough, all the component parts of what makes Nighty Night so brilliant were there. Stalking, toilet humour, bizarre scenarios involving disgusting and unlikely outcomes. Something was missing though.

This particular episode focused on Jill, and her pursual of Don, her
killing (or attempted) of everyone around him, and the destroying of
Kath.

MS stricken Kath, crutches bound for the whole of the first series, had got better, but, with Jill’s intervention, is now slowly deteriorating. Hardly surprising when Jill makes her vomit, tries to steal Don’s semen whilst he’s on the operating table and has a go at seducing their 10 year old son (with yet another silly dance).

This is all classic Nighty Night, so why didn’t I get into it as much last night? I think it is because the show has almost become a parody of itself. All the catchphrases are there and all the character’s ticks. They haven’t really changed though. If Jill’s antics left me reeling and rocking in the first series, they now leave me a little cold.

Maybe Davis’ is trying too hard to make this series more shocking than the last? Maybe it’s just suffering from the ‘difficult second series’ syndrome. Or maybe I’m just in a funny mood. I’ll keep watching and see how I feel by the end. [Mof Gimmers]
