Hyperdrive marks a historic first in my TV viewing career – the first time I've ever wished for canned laughter in a sitcom. It would've been handy to know which bits were meant to be funny.
When BBC2's Nick Frost-starring sitcom was announced last year, producers described it as "a hilarious version of Das Boot in space". In fact it's a gnawingly bad version of 'Orrible in space, with a script so lame it made me nostalgic for Up the Elephant & Round the Castle.
Quality original comedies like The Late Edition and Monkey Dust still languish on the digital subs' bench, and even the sublime Thick of It sat out two series on BBC4. And Hyperdrive managed to get not just a BBC commission, but a terrestrial BBC commission. Were sexual favours on offer?
Supersonically bad. Abort mission.

Remember the unfunny bits in the later series of Red Dwarf? They were comedy gold compared to this...
Possibly the worst attempt at comedy I have ever seen. Whoever commissioned this could never have actually read any of the scripts or watched a pilot and they must be kicking themselves for taking a risk 'that it won't be that bad'. Think of the most cringingly awful TV moment in history and then double it - voila, you have Hyperdrive !!. It was abysmal. embarrassing and as funny as the closing credits to Ready, Steady, Cook
Could not disagree more. I have been watching it for the last couple of weeks and i have to say that it is finding it's feet very well. Very funny in places, really enjoying it.
A great attempt to do something different. It is NOT Red Dwarf which even at it's best I found patchy and annoying.
I completely agree with the other Andrew. A couple of episodes were patchy, to say the least, but it has promise. The transmissions from the home base, or whatever, were the high point for me. Second series please.
